With summer comes heat and the need to drink even more water than normal to stay hydrated. I find when drinking glass after glass of water, my taste buds get bored. I mix it up by drinking ice tea, but that has caffeine and can make you less hydrated.
Two great ways to add some pizzazz to your water - to help you drink more and to keep you healthy are lemon and lime essential oils.
The how to:
Add one to two drops of PURE essential oils to your glass or metal water vessel, vigorously stir and drink like normal.
The oils need to be pure, to be sure you're ingesting something that is safe and tested. There's a few brands out there, Spark Naturals* and doTERRA* are two companies that come to mind. One way to ensure the EOs are safe for internal consumption is to read the label; noting that there should be a clause indicating it can be used for "dietary use."
If this is your first time adding EOs to water, always start with one drop, to see how your body will react. I recognize that there is a debate in the essential oil world about whether or not to use EOs internally. This needs to be a personal decision you make, doing your own research. Update: Please consider consulting a certified aromatherapist or other medical professional prior to ingesting essential oils. 10/2013
It's delicious, in my opinion.
But even better, ingesting lemon has health benefits - liver detoxification and cleansing.
To quote Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. in The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils: "The process starts with Phase I, in which the essential molecules or toxins are made water soluble and more responsive to further elimination reactions by Phase II enzymes."
